Initial Ideas

Our initial idea was to have 2 girl  in a horror setting of dark and creepy scenes. They go into an abandoned barn that we have specifically chosen for the location to be a good horror setting. ( See summary of initial ideas).Through editing, acting music and sound effects we will create a tense and  dramatic film opening. The scene cuts as the camera comes closer to the girls and blacks out.

We will use music that will build tension such as '28 Weeks later theme song.' We thought this would be good as it is from a horror film so it will be good at setting the pace of suspense and drama.

The was a lot of discussion on our ideas for genre, location etc but with compromise we came up with the original idea we have now of a horror in an abandoned barn. We have agreed that if we decide to further change ideas in future; we will be flexible and open minded as we cannot be entirely sure that the plot we have will go to plan as there may be technical problems, issues with the location etc.

At one point we suggested a genre of comedy. It would have been similar to the opening credits of 'Napoleon dynamite,' where a character is doing things that identify them as a character such as packing a bag with lipstick and a phone to represent a typical teenage girl or glasses and books for nerdy type of person. Credits would have been well presented using objects and scenery that fits the themes around the person which could be done in creative ways. The mise on scene would be simplistic and effective. We decided against this because although it would set the genre, themes and characters in the film, it would not foreshadow a good, original plot and would not be very challenging to do.

After several different approaches to our film, I decided to carry out some research to see which genre would be best for our final idea. I found that thriller is most popular and from this our ideas developed to what we could do. I researched the thriller genre and found that good thrillers include:

Suspense and excitement for the audience
Violence
injustice in society
Low key lighting
Quick cuts
tension
Changes in angles of shots
Mystery
Music that creates a tense atmosphere
Mise en scene including dark clothing, film stoke, a location that is appropriate for the genre
